The series takes place on a desert planet named Gunsmoke. Vash the Stampede is a legendary outlaw with a $$60 billion bounty on his head. Millie and Meryl are agents of the Bernardelli Insurence Company who are assigned to find Vash and keep him from causing damage.
Ok, that's the starting point. When you first start watching the series, you don't know who Vash the Stampede is, just like the Insurence girls. Comedy reigns suprime for the first several episodes as we learn that Vash, the legendary outlaw responsible for the destruction for one the major cities on the planet, is in reality and goofball who loves doughnuts and chases women. I personally was drawn in by the comedy. I enjoy funny anime, and Trigun definatly has humor! But towards the middle of the series, I was watching for other reasons. Mostly because I wanted to know what was going on with Vash and what would happen to him. I'm very drawn towards characters in things that I see and read, and Vash is one character with a lot of depth. After you start to learn about him, the series takes a darker turn. There is still comedy, but it's spaced out more. The mask of Vash being a goofball becomes more fragile, and you realize that he's a very emotional character, one that's haunted by his past. And I for one was on the edge of my seat at times, simply because I like his character. I'm not some fangirl that falls in love with anime characters, but I do have some that I really like, and Vash is one of them. Wolfwood is too, but that's another story and a very big spoiler!
