Revolutionary Girl Utena
Format I've seen: TV series
Rating: D
Rewatchable: No

Revolutionary Girl Utena is a story about girl that wishes to be a prince. At least, that's the main premise. Story-wise, the series starts out when Utena Tenjou challenges a member of the Student Council to a duel because he embarresed her best friend. She wins, with a wooden sword no less, and discovers that now she is a Duelist, fated to duel for possesion of the Rose Bride. This turns out to be a rather typical shoujou drama series, with some comedy episodes thrown in.

While I was interested enough to finish the series and see what happens, it's not one I would watch again. I can't really explain why except that I didn't like how it ended. Basicly, everyone loses. Not to mention the fact that there's some serious adultry going on, as well as betrayl by just about everyone except Utena. After all, she's the heroine. She makes mistakes, but she's honest about it! *ahem* The storyline itself wasn't a bad one. The setup with the Dueling Club and some of the character interactions were interesting, and the animation wasn't too bad. But the only part I really liked about it was that Anthy frees herself. In fact, she's the only one that doesn't lose in this series. Not that she wins what she wants, exactly, but she leaves her brother and goes off to do what she wants to, rather then stay and follow a person that only physically resembles the brother that she used to love.

In other words, if you're looking for a dark, rather twisted shoujou romance with some fantasy action, you might like Utena. Otherwise, don't bother.
